It is fair to say that the pros and cons of owning a classic campervan are pretty subjective. Some may decry the relative lack of features when compared to modern vans, where other people may prize a campervan for its simple charms that harken back to a bygone age. Here are some pros and cons of owning a classic campervan with a view to being as balanced as possible.
Pro – There is Desirable Fan-Driven Appeal
Classic campervans are very sought-after items. They have a solid fan base, which is one of the reasons why classic campers are so expensive. This is also partly due to the fact that classic campervans look good, they have that old-time appeal, and they are actually useful items. They are not like a classic car that you only get out on bank holidays. A classic campervan can be used to go on holiday too.
Con – The Insurance Can Get Pretty Pricey
There are two factors. The first is that classic vehicles have poor quality safety features and security features when compared to modern vehicles. The second affecting factor is that the campervan is often an expensive item in its own right, which means there is a bigger risk for insurers. Before you even consider buying a classic campervan, go online and find classic campervan insurance to see if the insurance prices you find are amounts you are willing to pay for van insurance.
Pro – They Are Pretty Simple To Maintain
It is true that you have to be very careful with your classic vehicle, but when it comes to maintenance, it is very easy. Classic campervans are not sophisticated when compared with modern vehicles. Though nobody would suggest you do the work yourself, the fact is that maintenance and repairs are pretty easy because of the simplistic nature of the vehicle’s build. You will not need to spend hundreds on computer diagnostics to replace a nut that is behind seven layers of sealed metal.
Cons – Getting Parts is Very Difficult
The older a vehicle is, the more difficult it is to find parts for it. This was a big problem, but it turns out that 3D printing may be the answer. There are now many classic car and van parts that can be printed so long as the specs exist for the part, and the fact is that most classic cars do have easily accessible part specs that are archived on the internet. With that said, even though some parts can be 3D printed, it is still expensive having the process done. It may not, however, be as expensive in the future when 3D printing becomes more mainstream.
Final Thoughts – You Decide What You Like
There are maintenance issues and repair issues, and even performance issues. Taking on a classic car or van is not something you should do if you are having money trouble. It is more a labour of love, and perhaps that is the only “Pro” you need. It is a hobby with benefits, something to look at and enjoy while you can and for as long as you can afford it.
