About the Creators

Cathy is a Youth Mental Health First Aider certified by Mental Health First Aid UK (MHFA UK). Freya is Cathy’s 14 year old daughter and knows just how much anxiety and neurodivergence can affect teenagers. Freya is in a unique position to help tackle this problem, as she has been through many of the same struggles; she was diagnosed autistic at age 13 during a massive mental health crisis. She feels that coming to terms with her autism has played a large part in her recovery, along with learning what stresses and calms her. She knows exactly how it feels to go through life anxious, and wants to do everything she can to make Teen Calm accessible and affordable for all.

Rising Anxiety

Covid-19 is the biggest health crisis in decades, causing widespread anxiety. The actual affects of lockdown itself are far-reaching too of course. This is hardly surprising; we are experiencing the greatest limits on our freedom and most restrictions ever imposed during peacetime. Feelings of low mood and isolation are understandable; expected even. So there has been no better time to prioritise teaching our younger generation the importance of self-care and enabling them to do this effectively.

Teen Calm has been designed to do just this. It encourages our younger generations to practise self-care and develop confidence, resilience and a sense of wellbeing.

There are lots of teens who are in a position of not knowing how to self-regulate. This maybe due to a long-term condition like ASD or ADHD, other neurodivergent causes, from being bullied, or have suffered a trauma. Often it’s simply a symptom of the biochemical challenges of adolescence, combined with the pressures of life. Activities that promote relaxation and relieve stress can help people learn to regulate themselves better. Teen Calm boxes are filled with such activities.

Teen Calm Box Contents

The box is nicely presented and not too visually overstimulating, which we feel is a good thing! The contents included a lovely selection of goodies; a bag of sweets, wooden handmade heart in a little bag with a rainbow design, highlighter pens, lip bomb, tangle toy, notebook and affirmation card.

My concern with this type of subscription boxes is often the amount of waste we can end up with and also potentially unwanted items. This wasn’t too much of an issue luckily. There was minimal packaging (although it would have been even better still if the tangle toy didn’t come in packaging!) and it was carefully padded in tissue paper. The items are well chosen with lovely positive messages and uplifting designs. This box makes a cute gift that should bring a smile to anyone’s face!

(Of course, the contents of each box will be different, but hopefully this gives an idea of the kind of things to expect!)

  8. I think this is such a great idea. Younger and younger it seems that kids need to be taught about self-care. This is a really good way of doing that and opening up the conversation.

  10. Nice prize. Quality of life is important. Teen years can be a time of intense feelings / emotions. A developmental stage, though doesn’t feel like that at the time. These times we are presently living through :- Lockdown, unprecedented time. Calm is what we need.
